DECEMBERS FIVE FOODIE MUST-HAVES

This is Decembers five foodie must-haves, brought to you by Velvet magazine

Eat It

Pizza Pilgrims, Cambridge

It started with brothers James and Thom Elliot making a six-week pilgrimage across Italy to find their Holy Grail pizza. Fast forward a decade and Pizza Pilgrims now has 20 bricks-and-mortar sites across the UK – the latest of which has just opened its doors on Cambridge’s Sidney Street. The hero of the menu is the Elliots’ signature slow-proved, wood-fired Neapolitan pizza, billed as “bready, chewy and flavoursome, with a hint of char. . . You can see why the Neapolitan Margherita is protected by UNESCO”.

Drink It

BrewBoard

Known for its quality craft beers – which range from flagship American-style pale ale Bambino to Fathergrime, a riff on classic stout – Harston microbrewery BrewBoard has opened a pop-up taproom on Cambridge’s Green Street. A chance to try and buy the brand’s beers, the pop-up coincides with the launch of two new 4.9% ABV Porters, available onsite both on draught and in can for takeout: Andromeda, spiked with honey, nutmeg and cinnamon, and fig-infused Perseus.

Brew It

Sugar Plum Tea from Tea Apothecary, Cambridge

When better to brew a cup of Sugar Plum Fairy Tea than Christmas? A best-seller for local loose-leaf brand Tea Apothecary, a regular on both Ely and Cambridge markets, it’s a fruity little number which, free from caffeine and filled with nice natural things (hibiscus, rosehip, apple, papaya, strawberry, blackberry), is suitable for both little and large tea-drinkers. If you find a pouch in your stocking come Christmas morning, though, be warned: maker Victoria Rothe says “this tea may make you want to dance around the room!”

* £5.50 per pouch, enough to brew eight to 12 cups

Lark Restaurant, Bury St Edmunds : Credit Suffolk News – Mark Westley

Promising to showcase Suffolk’s finest produce in a series of small plates, from fish crudo and cured meats to hand-rolled pasta dishes, new restaurant Lark is set to open in Bury St Edmunds this month. Taking over the former Flower Hut site on Angel Hill, husband and wife team James and Sophia Carn bring a wealth of experience to their first solo venture: he’s a chef, who spent more than five years at Pea Porridge, Suffolk’s only restaurant to hold a Michelin star, and she’s taught business at West Suffolk College for 12 years.
